4 Mistakes to Avoid When Planning Your Brand Photoshoot

I love creating brand photos for new and established businesses. Planning a brand photoshoot is a great way to build a strong visual identity for your business and compliments a cohesive marketing plan. I’ve photographed hundreds of different industries and here are the four common mistakes I see when it comes to brand photoshoots.

1.  You Don’t Have a Clear Goal or Objective for Your Photoshoot

What is the purpose of your photoshoot? Are you looking to update your website, create social media content or launch a new product …or all three?! Having a clear goal and communicating them to your photographer ahead of your shoot will guide decisions on your style, location, mood and shot list.

2.   Ignoring Brand Consistency During your Shoot
Before you plan your shoot location, wardrobe or relevant props or backdrops and keep your brand’s color scheme in mind. You don’t need to exactly match your brand or have a logo t-shirt on, but wearing colors that compliment your brand’s color schemes will make it easier to use your images on your website and on marketing flyers/communications. Need help coordinating for your shoot? I am happy to hop on the line and work through the logistics with you!

3. Forgetting to Communicate Your Goals Prior to the Shoot (to Photog AND models)

Think of your brand photos as an extension of your marketing plan. Plan every detail in advance, from the location and props to the wardrobe and poses. Conduct a thorough briefing with the photographer and any models or team members that might be involved in the shoot.

4. Overlooking the Importance of Lighting

Consider the lighting conditions of the location of your shoot. Discuss lighting setups with your photographer and conduct test shots if possible. Natural light can be great, but sometimes artificial lighting is necessary. If you're relying on natural light, schedule your shoot for times when the light is soft and flattering, such as early morning or late afternoon. If you have an idea on when and where you want your shoot, let's chat and make sure you are set up for success.
